Shortening of ijzertijdperk or ijzertijdvak, both calques of Danish jernalder or German Eisenzeitalter, Eisenzeit (itself a calque from Danish). The shortening may well have been influenced by Eisenzeit. Equivalent to ijzer (“iron”) + tijd (“age”).
