hot spare (plural hot spares)
- A spare device, component, or other piece of equipment which is kept powered up although not being actively used, allowing it to be immediately brought on line as a replacement should a piece of equipment fail while in active use.
- In addition to the six hard drives making up the primary RAID array, the server has three hot spares ready to automatically take over for any failed drives in the array.
