Possibly from a metathesis of Sanskrit विहग (vihaga, “bird”, literally “skygoer”), from विह (viha, “sky; air”) + ग (ga, “moving; reaching”), with semantic change. Compare Old Javanese wihaga (“bird; portent; omen; sign”).
