This is the most generic term for “shark”. Names of particular species of sharks are often compounds of this word, e.g. hacat cmaam (“diamond stingray”, literally “female shark”), hacat coospoj (“leopard shark”, literally “painted shark”), hacat coospoj caacoj (“tiger shark”, literally “big painted shark”), hacat cooxp (“great white shark”, literally “white shark”), etc.
