From Middle Welsh gruð, from Proto-Brythonic *grʉð, from Proto-Celtic *groudos (“cheek; slope”). Cognate with Cornish grudh (“jaw, mandible”), Irish grua (“cheek”), Scottish Gaelic gruaidh (“cheek”).
