Verbal derivative of Middle High German heie (hammer, club), from Old High German heia, from Proto-Germanic *hajaną (to pound), from Proto-Indo-European *(s)kh₂ey- (to hew), possibly reanalyzed from *sekh₂- (to cut).[1] Compare Luxembourgish Heel (hoe).
