Etymology

From an eastern dialectal form of fure, fura, from Old Norse fura. The -u stems from Old Norse accusative furu, which eastern Norwegian dialects have retained in short-syllable words.

Some dialects have metaphony in furu, although less noticeable than in some other words (e.g. vuku [²ʋʉ.kʉ] < [vi.ka]), while others have two different u-sounds. For instance North Gudbrand Valley with [²fʉ.ɾu] instead of *[²fu.ɾu] (compare turu [²tʰu.ɾu]).
