Etymology

From Old Danish forta, fortæ (space around a horse), the same word as forte. A compound of for- and Old Norse  n (path), from Proto-Germanic *tanhwą. Cf. Finnish tanhua (stockyard), which was borrowed from Proto-Norse or Proto-Germanic. The noun itself is derived from the adjective Proto-Germanic *tanhuz (tough).
