Recorded since at least the 1960s, where it occurs in Haldo Gibson's slang dictionary. Probably derived from flat (“flat”), alluding to an unwomanly body shape.

Flata has previously been a highly offensive slur towards homosexual women, but has been used by the gay rights movement as a self-descriptive term in order to reclaim and destigmatize it. See also bög.
