From Proto-Finnic *etä, possibly from Proto-Finno-Permic *ečkä, *ečä. Cognate to Finnish etä-, Ingrian etää, edähitee (“far”), Livonian edeh (“forwards, against”), Veps edahaks (“far”), and possibly Moksha [script needed] (ičkəźä, “far”). See also esi.
