Verb
döma (present dömer, preterite dömde, supine dömt, imperative döm)
- to sentence, to judge
- 1915, Dan Andersson, Kolvaktarens Visor, I timmerkojan på Sami:
- Hård var den lott vi dömdes att få -
målet - det må Herren förklara!- Hard was the lot we were sentenced to receive -
the goal - the Lord may explain!
- Hard was the lot we were sentenced to receive -
- to deem, to make a judgement
- (sports) to umpire, to referee
- (idiomatic, in "döm om min förvåning (när ...)") imagine my surprise (when ...)
Usage notes
- The spelling of this verb is irregular. Phonetically it should be *dömma, but the -m- is never doubled. The same is true of the related noun dom and derivatives.
