From Vulgar Latin *cunla, syncopated form of cūnula, diminutive of Latin cūna, cūnae (cradle), from Proto-Italic *koinā, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱoyneh₂, derived from the root *ḱey- (to be lying down; to settle). Doublet of cuna.
