Attested since circa 1750. Related to Spanish cantueso, perhaps from a Vulgar Latin *chamaetusius, from Ancient Greek χαμαί (khamaí, on the earth, ground) θύος (thúos, burnt offering), meaning "incense of the earth"[1]
