Supposedly from Danish byld, although Den Danske Ordbog says this word came from Norwegian. Moth and Kalkar give an alternative or older spelling of this word as buld. Related to Swedish böld and maybe to Icelandic búlda (“a woman with thick lips and cheeks”). May be also related to bule with a close meaning, which is a loan from Low German.
