From Proto-Mon-Khmer *pɔɔk (“to peel”). Cognate with Muong póc, Khmer បក (bɑɑk, “to peel”), Mon လ္ပံက်, Semai pook.
Probably unrelated to Old Chinese 剝 (OC *[p]ˤrok) (B-S) (SV: bác) and Thai ปอก (bpɔ̀ɔk), which might be connected with róc, lóc instead.
