Etymology

From Proto-Balto-Slavic *aulios (whence also Latvian aũlis (beehive)), from Proto-Indo-European *h₂ewlós, nominal form of *h₂ewlo- (tube, hole, channel). Cognate with Proto-Slavic *ulьjь (beehive; opening), Ancient Greek αὐλός (aulós, tube, pipe), Latin alvus (belly, beehive), etc.
