asto
See also: as to
Basque
Alternative forms
- arsto (Souletin)
Etymology
Uncertain. At least two proposals exist:
- from Spanish asno or Latin asinus, although phonetically improbable;
- from hartz (“bear”) + -to (diminutive suffix), phonetically impeccable, but semantically strange.
If the second is correct, then may be related to Aquitanian *asto, found in *Asto-ilunno.[1][2]
