First attested as suluelda in 838. Etymology uncertain. Compound composed of an unclear first element that might either be Old Dutch sele (hall home) or a term related to Old English syle (pool, bog), German Suhle (mire, wallow) and Old Dutch uelda (field). Compare Silvolde.
