Middle High German ziestac, from Old High German ziestag, ciesdac, from Proto-West Germanic *Tīwas dag (literally “Tiw's day”), a calque of Latin diēs Mārtis (literally “day of Mars”). Cognate with English Tuesday, West Frisian tiisdei, Swedish tisdag.
