Zäit

See also: zait

Luxembourgish

Etymology

From Old High German *zīd, northern variant of zīt, from Proto-Germanic *tīdiz. Cognate with German Zeit, Dutch tijd, English tide, West Frisian tiid, Icelandic tíð.

The plural Zäiten was adapted to the singular; the inherited form would have been *Zeiden. The prevocalic stem zeid- remains in zeideg (ripe), with the doublet zäiteg (timely) formed after the underlying noun. The third stem zeit- in Zeitung (newspaper) is borrowed from German (displacing obsolete Luxembourgish Zeideng).
