First attested as Nieuw-Schoonebekerveld in 1936. Compound of Dutch Low Saxon weit (“buckwheat”) and veen (“peat bog, marsh”). The village was named after a type of slash-and-burn agriculture involving buckwheat once frequently practiced in Drenthe.
