Warken
See also: warken
Dutch
Etymology
First attested with certainty as warken in 1416. Etymology unknown. A variety of derivations have been proposed: from Middle Dutch vorewerc (“farm belonging to a manor or monastery”), from werk (“fortification”), or from Old Dutch Waro (“a personal name”) suffixed with the collectivising suffix -ing-. None of these proposals match well with the earliest attestations of the toponym.
