Etymology

From Middle High German vogel, from Old High German fogal, from Proto-Germanic *fuglaz. The phonetic development is the same as e.g. in gezunn, from Middle High German gezogen. The variants Vugel and Vaul go back to Old High German fugal with lack of a-mutation; compare Ripuarian Vuggel.
