Inherited from Old Czech Velikonoc, Velkonoc (also Velika noc and Veliká noc). By surface analysis, veliký (“great”) + -o- + noc (“night”), originally a calque of Ancient Greek μεγάλη ἡμέρα (megálē hēméra).
