Etymology

Attested as Tarthorst in 1848. Compound of tarten (taunt, defy) and horst (overgrown elevated place). Named after a former castle that was allegedly given its name as a response to the construction of a castle named De Horst by the Bishopric of Utrecht in neighbouring Rhenen.
