Etymology
From Middle High German strieme, with -n from the oblique cases; borrowed from Middle Low German strieme (compare Dutch striem), ultimately from the root of Strahl (“beam, ray”).
Displaced native Middle High German strīm, strīme (“stripe”) (whence dialectal German Streim, Streime (“stripe”)), from Old High German strīmo (see Swedish strimma).
