Created at the end of the nineteenth century, from the elements Sol- as in Solveig, from Old Norse salr (“hall”) (by folk etymology interpreted as modern Norwegian sol (“sun”) ) and -frid as in Målfrid, Ingrid, etc, meaning "beautiful".
