From Middle High German schiech (“despondent, frightening, ugly”), from Proto-West Germanic *skeuh (“shy, fearful”), from Proto-Germanic *skeuhaz (“shy, fearful”). Cognate with Saterland Frisian skjou (“shy”), Dutch schuw (“shy”), English shy, Danish sky (“shy”), and doublet of schiech.
