First attested as ratmen in 1330. Etymology uncertain, although it is definitely not a compound with the element heem (home, settlement). Compare Bathmen, Berkum, Besthmen, Diermen, Fortmond, Giethmen, Helpman, Hertme, Rande, Reutum, Thamen, Wachtum and Wijthmen.
