Proper noun

the Psalms pl (normally plural, singular Psalm)

  1. (biblical) A book of the Old Testament of the Bible, and of the Tanakh.
Synonyms: Book of Psalms, (abbreviation) Ps., (abbreviation) Pss.

Usage notes

As each chapter of the Book of Psalms is an individual psalm, references to them prefer the singular form. It is more common (e.g.) to refer to Psalm 23 rather than Psalms 23 or the 23rd chapter of the Book of Psalms. The separate word psalter is commonly used when the Book of Psalms is copied or printed as an actual book separate from the rest of the bible.
