16th century, from Latin portio.

  • Hyphenation: Por‧ti‧on
  • Rhymes: -oːn

Noun

Portion f (genitive Portion, plural Portionen, diminutive Portiönchen n)

  1. portion, an allocated amount, (chiefly) a portion of food, a serving, helping
  2. (informal, with certain adjectives) an amount (of some size)

Usage notes

  • The German word cannot mean “part of a whole” in general. For example such constructions as *eine Portion des Films (a portion of the film), *eine Portion der Straße (a portion of the road) would be meaningless.
