Etymology
First attested as Montem circumfossatum qui Miemekar nuncupator in 1258. Derived from Latin mons (“mountain, hill”) and fortis (“strong, fortified”). Compare Hardenberg, Montfoort, Sterkenburg and Stoutenburg.
