Reduced Anglicized form of Irish Ó Maolmhuaidh (“descendant of Maolmhuadh”), a personal name composed of maol (“chieftain”) + muadh (“noble, big”). It could also be an Anglicized form of Ó Maolmhaodhóg (“descendant of the servant of (Saint) Maodhóg”); compare Logue.
