First attested as marislo in 1346-1347. Derived from a compound of Proto-Germanic *mariska- (“land next to water, swamp, pasture”) and lo (“light forest, pool”). Not a compound of Proto-Germanic *mari- (“lake, pool, watercourse”) and lo.
