Dutch

Etymology

First attested as parochia manen at the end of the 13th century. Etymology unknown. A derivation from made (hayfield, meadow) is not supported by the oldest attestations. A derivation from Middle Dutch maen (poppy, Papaver sp.) is equally unsupported.
