Etymology 1
From Middle High German leist (“foot trace, last”), from Old High German leist (“foot trace, last”), from Proto-Germanic *laistaz. Cognate with Dutch leest, English last, Swedish läst. The originally strong noun became weak in Early Modern German (der Leiste) and then strong again through generalisation of oblique -en (as usual in inanimate nouns).
