Leeuwte
Dutch
Etymology
- (Drenthe) First attested as Lieuwete in 1811-1813. Etymology unknown. Compare Beneden-Leeuwen, Boven-Leeuwen, Leeuwen, Heiligerlee, Westerlee, Denderleeuw, Gors-Opleeuw, Lauw, Sint-Pieters-Leeuw and Zoutleeuw.
- (Overijssel) First attested as de lenethe [read: leuethe] in 1133. Appears to be derived from Old Dutch lew (“mound, burial mound”) suffixed with the collectivising suffix *-iþi; however, there is no archeological evidence of the presence of burial mounds near the settlement. Compare Beneden-Leeuwen, Boven-Leeuwen, Leeuwen, Heiligerlee, Westerlee, Denderleeuw, Gors-Opleeuw, Lauw, Sint-Pieters-Leeuw and Zoutleeuw.
