Etymology

First attested as harpede in 1108-1121. Etymology uncertain. Potentially derived from Proto-Germanic *harpa (sharp bend) suffixed with the collectivising suffix *-iþi. An alternative hypothesis proposes a derivation from Old Dutch *harpian (to harrow a field). Compare Herpen, as well as the morphologically similar English toponyms Harpenden, Harpford, Harpley, Harpsden and Harptree.
