From a Slavic name, from Proto-Slavic *gordьcь, diminutive of *gordъ (“fortification, castle”). Cognate with Graz (and Slovene Grȃdəc), Czech Hradec (Králové), Polish grodziec (“hill-fort”), and Macedonian градец (gradec, diminutive of град (grad)).
