From Middle Low German Frankrīke, from Old Saxon *Frankrīki. The name is a compound of Proto-West Germanic *frankō (“a Frank”) and *rīkī (“kingdom”).
Equivalent to franker (“the Franks”) + rike (“realm”). Compare Danish Frankrig, Dutch Frankrijk, German Frankreich.
