Borrowed from Sinhalese එළු (eḷu), හෙළු (heḷu), from Prakrit 𑀲𑀻𑀳𑀮 (sīhala) (compare Pali sīhala), from Sanskrit सिंहल (siṃhala, literally lionlike), from सिंह (siṃha, lion) + -ल (-la). Doublet of Ceylon and Sinhala.
