First attested as duuelant and duuinlant in 1206. Compound of a first element that has been variously interpreted as Middle Dutch Duve (“a personal name”), Middle Dutch *duve (“hill”) and beduven (“to cover in water, to dip in water”) and land (“land”). Compare Duiven, Duivendijke, Duivendrecht and Duivenvoorde.
