Etymology
From Middle High German kirchwīhe, from Old High German chirichwīhī, from chirich (“church”) + wīhī (“consecration”), meaning “festival celebrating the consecration of a church (or the anniversary of such consecration)”. Equivalent to Chilche (“church”) + Wiihi (“consecration”). Cognate with German Kirchweih.
