- Occupational surname for a leather worker, from Old French boulgier, an agent derivative of boulge (“leather bag”).
- Anglicized form of Irish Ó Bolghuidhir, Ó Bolguidhir (“descendant of Bolgodhar”), a personal name composed of the elements bolg (“belly”) + odhar (“yellow; sallow”).
