First attested as bekenesse in 1363. Compound of an unclear first element and Middle Dutch nesse (“headland, spit”). The first element may be Beke (“a personal name”) or a hydronym derived from beke (“brook, stream”), which would be a rarity for the polders west of Utrecht.
