Ampsen
Dutch
Etymology
First attested with certainty as amspen in 1302. Etymology uncertain. Perhaps derived from Proto-Germanic *Amsanô (“a hydronym”) with -n- suffix. The element heem (“home, settlement”) is not evident from older forms of the toponym and etymologies built around it must be rejected.
Pronunciation
- IPA(key): /ˈɑmp.sə(n)/
- Hyphenation: Amp‧sen
