Two possible origins:
- English surname from the Norman personal name Achard, from Proto-Germanic *Agjōharduz, which is composed of the elements *agjō (“edge”) and *harduz (“hard; brave”).
- Borrowed from German Ackert, a surname which shares the same etymology as the English one; it could also be an Americanized spelling of German Eckert.
