Etymology
From Russian Абха́зия (Abxázija, “Abkhazia”), derived from абха́з (abxáz, “Abkhazian, Abkhaz person”), from Georgian აფხაზი (apxazi, “Abkhaz person”), either from Mingrelian აფხაზა (apxaza), from *აბღაზა (*abɣaza), from *აბაზღა (*abazɣa), from Old Abkhaz *абазӷа (*abazğa), or from Old Georgian აფხაზი (apxazi), from earlier *აბაზხ-ი (*abazx-i), from Mingrelian *აუ̂აზხ-ი (*aûazx-i), most likely from a Hellenic source.
