Perhaps from Persian خانه‎ (xâne, “house”), from Proto-Iranian *wāhana (“habitation”), derived from *Hwah- (“to dwell, remain”), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hwas- (“to dwell, inhabit; to stay a night”), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European Proto-Indo-European *h₂wes- (“to dwell, live, reside; to stay, spend the night”).

Suffix

-xane f (Arabic spelling ـخانە‎)

  1. Used to form nouns indicating buildings
    ‎sêwî (“orphan”) + ‎-xane → ‎sêwîxane (“orphanage”)
  2. Used to form nouns indicating rooms
    ‎xew (“sleep”) + ‎-xane → ‎xewxane (“bedroom”)
