Borrowed from Late Latin -izāre. Doublet of -ejar, which was inherited.
Suffix
-itzar (verb-forming suffix, first-person singular present -itzo, first-person singular preterite -itzí, past participle -itzat)
- added to the stem of a noun or adjective to form a verb meaning “to give something the character of” the root noun or adjective: -ize
- urbà (“urban”) + -itzar → urbanitzar (“urbanize”)
